Revisiting Liverpool and Andriy Yarmolenko
Given that Liverpool were willing to spend £30m on Willian, even if the Brazilian does end-up going to Spurs, is a very positive sign about the club’s financial ambition. Supposedly, any incoming deals up to that value are not dependent on Luis Suarez’s sale, so we can assume that Brendan Rodgers is still looking to add to his squad.
About a year ago, I suggested that Liverpool take a look at Dinamo Kiev’s Andriy Yarmolenko, and nothing he did in 2012/13 has made me change my mind about that – the Ukrainian international would still be an outstanding signing.
If Rodgers wants a Willian-type player, then Yarmolenko is not going to be his cup of tea, but the 23 year-old does offer a lot of the same attacking strengths. He’s not as technical, and he isn’t as good to watch, but he’s a powerful and direct winger who loves to cut-in off the wing and has no inhibitions about trying his luck from within thirty yards – and he’s better with the ball at his feet than you’d expect from a taller, rangier player.
An expensive player, but an extremely good one – Liverpool could do a lot worse, and Yarmolenko would make them instantly a better side.
